Brian T. Smitth

Brian T. SmithUNC NROTC Class of 1984.

A native of Mount Holly, North Carolina, Brian is a retired Sailor, now working as a nonprofit management consultant in the Washington DC metro area.

Brian enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1978. While serving, he earned a Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps scholarship to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He graduated with a Bachelors of Arts degree in History in 1984 and was commissioned as a Navy Ensign.

Brian's sea tours included assignments from division officer through command of USS FREDERICK (LST 1184), and the Deputy Commander of Expeditionary Strike Group SEVEN. In his final sea assignment, he served as the Commodore of Amphibious Squadron FOUR, deploying as the Commander of IWO JIMA Expeditionary Strike Group, supporting combat operations.

Ashore, he served in a variety of staff and command positions, including the Legislative Advisor to the Chief of Navy Reserve, the Chief of Staff for Navy Expeditionary Combat Command, the Commander of Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Reserve Component Command, and the Senior Military Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs.

His military awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit (4), Bronze Star Medal for Valor, Meritorious Service Medal (5), the Navy and Marine Corps Combat Action Ribbon, and other personal, unit, and service awards.

Brian completed a Master of Business Administration degree at Stratford University, a Master of Arts degree in Management at University of Redlands, a graduate program in Space Systems from the Naval Postgraduate School, a Naval War College diploma, and a graduate program in Nonprofit Management at the George Washington University.

He is a life member of the Military Officers Association of American, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the UNC NROTC Alumni Association.

Brian and his wife, Lisa, reside in National Harbor, MD, are ardent Washington Nationals fans, and are committed to supporting charitable causes serving disabled Veterans.
