Stephen D. Matts

Stephen D. MattsSteve came to UNC late in life, joining the ROTC Alumni Association while a staff member at the unit from 2006 to 2010. Originally from New York, he attended the United States Naval Academy (BS Mathematics) prior to commissioning. Later, while stationed at US Strategic Command, he earned an MBA from Bellevue University.

Steve spent twenty years as a nuclear submarine officer, serving in a variety of sea and shore billets which culminated in a highly successful command tour of USS West Virginia (SSBN-736G). Following submarine command, he served as Chief of Staff and Executive Staff Director of the National Nuclear Security Administration, where he dealt with issues involving US nuclear weapons, international nonproliferation, naval nuclear propulsion, and counterterrorism. Steve was also lucky enough to live in London for three years as the Commander, US Naval Activities United Kingdom, with responsibility for administration, policy, and support of US Navy units throughout the United Kingdom, Gibraltar, and Northern Europe.

His final tour in the Navy was perhaps the best, serving as Commanding Officer of the Naval Reserve Officers Training Unit, North Carolina Piedmont Region. As a visiting Professor at Duke University, North Carolina State University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he was able to leave a piece of himself on active duty in the form of the future Navy and Marine Corps Officers that he trained and mentored.

Like so many Professors of Naval Science before him, Steve found it difficult to leave Chapel Hill after retiring from the Navy. He continues to live in the area and has stayed busy as a business consultant here in the Research Triangle and as a defense contractor working to secure naval bases and nuclear facilities around the world from terrorist and criminal activity.
