Circumstances of Death:

LTJG Stevenson was a crewmember aboard a military aircraft that crashed at sea (non-hostile action) while enroute to Kadena Air Base Okinawa. The accident took place in the South China Sea approximately 43 miles northeast of Wha Trang, South Vietnam. The missing report was received 17 June 1965. Report of death was received 21 June 1966

He is honored at the Vietnam War Memorial, Panel 08E, Row 058, in Washington, D.C.

Training Squadron THIRTY-ONE (VT-31) , U.S. Naval Air Station, Corpus Christi, Texas.

Training Squadron THIRTY-ONE was awarded the Chief of Naval Operations Annual Aviation Award for training squadrons in the Naval Air Advanced Training Command for fiscal year 1966. Part of the congratulatory letter reads: "In winning this coveted award, Training Squadron THIRTY-ONE had the most outstanding safety record within the Naval Air Advanced Training Command. During this fiscal year your squadron flew 32,741 hours, made 2501 carrier arrested landings and completed 249 student aviators, all without an accident. This record could only be achieved though active command attention, dedication, leadership and the professional competence of the men and officers of Training Squadron THIRTY-ONE."
